Heart Of Nutrition

Erin Naimi, R.D., CEDRD Nutrition Therapist

Erin is a compassionate person and brings this to her work with eating disorder clients. I have known her since she began her career and she has worked in a variety of settings including my residential program , Monte Nido and my day treatment program, The Eating Disorder Center of California. Erin brings all of this training to her private practice work.

Erin is empathic but strong enough to challenge an eating disorder, both qualities are important for a dietitian in this field. Erin has a lot to say and thinks outside the box in order to come up with new strategies for her clients. This is one reason why I asked Erin to be one of the dietitians from around the country to contribute to the nutrition chapter of Third edition of The Eating Disorder Sourcebook. I am happy to know Erin and grateful she is in the field.

"Erin Naimi is a gifted straightforward dietitian. She offers a way out of the hellish cycle of eating disorders and inspires her clients to reexamine their relationship between food and their bodies."

Erin's sessions aren't about dieting - she helps you work through your emotions surrounding food. Her sessions are like therapy and they focus on all areas of your life - not just food. Her sessions have transformed my life and she's been able to give me real ways to work through my emotional eating issues. When I first started seeing her, I was frustrated about dieting and exercising compulsively. Now, I can eat without guilt, and lead a healthy balanced life. Anyone that wants to gain a new perspective on themselves and their relationship with food or their body should visit Erin. I feel so lucky to have found her!

“I was first diagnosed with anorexia at the age of 14 and in the 10 plus years since have gone to countless therapists, nutritionists, and psychiatrists, including a bunch during a stint in the hospital. All of them remain precious to me in one way or another. But the truth is that I never made as much progress in all those years as I have in the last two years with Erin.

When I made my first appointment with Erin I was expecting a knowledgeable nutritionist with the usual experience treating eating disorders to just help me get by. But what I found was more than a nutritionist. A LOT more. Erin has for me been a sort of life coach/therapist/nutritionist who, using my relationship with food as a foundation, has managed to open up and liberate other parts of my life that I had forgotten about or assumed were done growing.

My eating is now based on my own hunger and fullness, rather than calories, the clock, or the people around me. Not only has she helped my eating stabilize, but my life has changed in profound ways. Where other nutritionists and therapists fear to go, Erin will explore intelligently and honestly. Rather than putting a band-aid on your disorder, she heals you from the inside out; she has a sincere gift for gently turning your attention to those long-held beliefs that lay at the very root of your eating disorder and making you question them. Her instincts for what her clients need and are ready for are truly remarkable. She continues to be an inspiration to me and I look forward to our session each and every week.

The last year of working with Erin has completely changed my life. For the first ever I am eating without restriction, counting calories, or guilt. Before we began our work I felt that there was no hope of ever winning the diet war, and that I would just be unhappy about my body and obsessive in my behaviors forever. Now, Erin has repaired the way I live on a day to day basis, and I am grateful to her every day for seeing me through some of the most difficult times. Because of her insight, patience, and wonderful nature, I feel that I am on my way to truly accepting my body for what it is and all that it has to offer. She is truly a blessing.

"I went to Erin because I had been having gastrointestinal problems for over a year. Erin was a wonderful listener, and her recommendations on diet turned my condition around. I only wish I had consulted her sooner!"

It's hard to put into words how working with Erin has changed my life. I was six years into "recovery" from a very severe and chronic eating disorder, but still felt fearful and mistrusting of food and my body unless I was eating off of a set meal plan, and using the scale to keep myself feeling in control. I didn't really believe that anyone could convince me otherwise, or improve my very fragile recovery. I was afraid to try anything that included trusting myself or my body, and had several relapses when I did try. By the time I met Erin, I felt ashamed at how many dieticians I had left due to my fears and even warned her not to be too hopeful. From the first session, I could tell that she was different from anyone I had seen before. I felt comfortable talking to her right from the start and knew that she understood me quickly. She was compassionate, but I trusted her so she was able to help me change my relationship with food little by little. Soon, I started to feel less afraid, less anxious about food, and because of that, my trust in myself started to grow. Now, the diet books are gone, the scale is gone, the fear is gone, and the guilt is gone. I still can't believe that I can maintain my weight and eat the foods I really like, when I think about how many years I lived not believing that. Since then, Erin also coached me on how to teach and implement the intuitive eating concept at home with my three kids. They caught on immediately because there wasn't as much for them to unlearn. I am so grateful that I found Erin and that she has a way of relating that is easy for me to grasp and trust. She is very gifted at what she does, and anyone who works with her can feel that.

In the past, I was misguided in handling my over-eating with dieting and Gastric Bypass Surgery. These methods did not work because I never addressed my relationship or attitudes towards food. I am now learning to benefit from Erin’s approach of mindfulness and intuitive eating. She has impressed me as a teacher and faithful listener as she examines the pitfalls and obstacles that we put ourselves in trying to manage our food habits. My sessions with her provide a safe and nurturing environment. I look forward to continuing my journey with Erin to restore my peace of mind and a better quality of life.

Working with Erin and learning how to eat intuitively is helping to liberate me of the rules and restrictions of diets and teaching me a way of healthy and pleasurable eating that I can maintain the rest of my life. The liberation from the rules is very scary at first, but by taking baby steps to trust my intuition and become attuned with my body, a literal and figurative weight is being lifted off my shoulders.......

My consultation with Erin Naimi was lengthy and informative. She has also kindly made herself available since then to answer occasional questions. I'm very happy that she is now a member of my health support team!

Working with Erin has provided a safe, nurturing and honest environment to confront the challenges I haven't been willing to face in the past. I have learned more about myself in the past 10 months of working with Erin than I have through all my other weight loss attempts. More importantly, Erin has helped me discover how taking small steps can go a very long way. I have a long way to go, and certainly much more to learn, but the work that I've done with Erin so far has helped to make me a happier and healthier person.

Erin, thank you so much for meeting with me. I was really more confused and fearful than I realized about choosing foods due to my blood-sugar problems and cancer, not to mention all the egregious reading I get myself into. You helped calm my paranoia and outlined an excellent, stress-free game-plan to keep myself on track.

I want to thank you most kindly for being there when I needed a confidant, knowledgable and compassionate nutritionist. When I came to see you my diet was a shambles. Plum tarts and coffee each and every morning and skipping meals along the way. I had just gotten over a terrible kidney stone episode and was determined to change how I get through the day and what I put in my body. You guided me to a sustainable balanced diet and I took like a fish to water. I'm happy to report that I am on track, and even look forward to taking my supplements. I have more energy and a better sense of my balance. Thanks again for your wonderful service.
